DEPARTURE OF MAILS

COMPLAINT AGAINST SECRECY. The secrecy observed in New Zealand regarding the departure of mails was tho subject of a question asked of the Minister of Defence by Dr. Thacker yesterday. Dr. Thacker asked whether this secrecy was being observed by Imperial direction or by New Zealand War Regulation. In Western Australia tho fullest information was published of the day and hour of the departure of all mails. The secrecy here was seriously hampering business. Sir James Allen: By Imperial instructions we have been directed not to give notic-e of tho departure of mails and troopships. I am perfectly well aware of wl*it it being done in Western Australia. It is not part of our duty to follow tho lead of other places in regard to these matters.
