SOLDIERS' CHRISTMAS FUND
MEETING OF CITIZENS' COMMITTEE ' A mooting, of the Citizens' Committee in connection with the Soldiers' Christmas Fund was held in No. 2 Committee Room of the Town Hall hist evening, Mr. C. G. Wilson being in the chair. . Mr. A. A. Marriott, the treasurer, read the financial statement, showing that the receipts for the' twelve months ended Juno 30, 1917, from all sources amounted to .£3253 Ss. lid., and the balance, less tho outstanding amount, stood at about JZBSO, but at the end of July the balance was reduced to .£493 3s. 7d., just about sufficient to cover the cost of tho parcels for August. Tho treasurer intimated that it would be necessary to raise additional funds.
Tho Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) made n- statement as to the work dono by the Ladies' Committee,' and stated that'a canvass mado recently had resulted in providing about one-fifth of the oost of the plum puddings.. Tho gifts were in kind, consisting of flour, suet, etc. ■ According to the statement read by the Beovetary of the Ladies' Committee (Mrs. Barltrop) from January this year to date 370 cases containing 15,979 parcels, were packed for the men in tho trenchos. These contained condensed milk, jam, sweets, meat extract, or tinned fish, chocolate, socks, etc. To the Wireless Troop at Mesopotamia 132 parcels were sent. The men on departing troojwhips have received 11 cases of limo juice, 12 of lemons, 5 ot apples, one case citrate of magnesia, aYid 28 cases containing such things as writing and shaving materials, toilet requisites, playing games, tins of eweets, biscuits, etc. ';,. „,_,,. .; On tho motion of Mr. L. T. Walking it was resolved that a thanks be accorded tho Ladies' Committee, especially tho Mayoress, tho hon.' treasurer (Miss Clark), and tho hoh. secretary (Mrs. Barltrop); further that tho sporte(bodies endeavour to raise a sum of .£3OOO for the Soldiers' Christmas Gift linid. . Mm. Luke thanked the sports bodies for their ipast help, and assured them that if they still reposed confidence in the Ladies Committee She latter would do thoir utmost to help in the worlc.
