RUSSIAN MORALE SLOWLY RECOVERING
Tlie great artillery battle iu the West has reached titanic proportions. llie intensity of the cannon ading is so terrific that in the English coast towns the grounds trembles and the windows rattle. But as yet there is iio sign of tho advance. Sir Douglas Haig says little or nothing' about tho bombardmont, and refers chiefly to trench raids and air exploits. On tho German side tho.bombardment is also intense, but the British are sending over far more sh ells. Tho Frcnch on tho Aisne have further improved their position, and successfully repulsed, with punishing losses, German attempts at a recovery on the Heuse, near Verdun. On the Russian front the military situation is much as it was. Tho Russians are still retreating before the organised pressure of tho Germans, bnt, says ono correspondent, there aro signs of a change of temper m the Russian ranks. Units which previously fled in panic-stricken rout are now "digging in" and preparing to meet tho enemy. Mr. Wilton, the ■ British correspondent with Rus?ian Headquarters, sends a vivid picture of the earlier 6tagcs of tho Russian collapse, and its connection with the Leninist Anarchist conspiracy in JP etrograd. 'l'ho Rumanians have further improve<l their position, and on ono sector have re-established themselves 011 their old lines.
