ASSAULTING A CHINESE
A POLICE CONSTABLE FINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, July 30. In the Police Court this morning. Constable Patrick Jlullen was proceeded against by Ben Sing on a charge of having assaulted him. The informant alleged that defendant had endeavoured to prevent him going to his home, where he kept a laundry, and subsequently assaulted him. Informant also said that earlier in the evening ho had a?k«l the constable to leave a coot shop at which informant assisted. Defendant, in evidence, said that ho went to the she;> in the course of his duly, and jtfterwards complainant accosted him in the street in a, very excited manner, charging hire with driving his customers away. Complainant rushed at defendant, who fended him oIT. The Magistrate said it was evident the Chinaman, who vas excited, had beset the constable, who lost his patience, and used more force in attempting to free himself than was warranted; but it was not a calculated assault. He fined defendant ,t'3, and cosls.
