ENGLAND'S FOOD

THE AGRICULTURAL RETURNS \ INCREASED AREA UNDER CROPS London, July 27. The Press Bureau reports: "The preliminary annual agricultural returns show the following acreage in England and Wales for the harvest of 1917 :— Wheat, 1,911,000, a decrease of 1000 aores; barley, 1,459,000 acres; oats, 2,230,000 acres; potatoes, 504,000. These figures represent increases of: Barley, 127,000 acres, oats 145,000 acres, and potatoes 7600 acres. The result exceeds expectations, and proves that the farmers made an exceptional effort in the spring under unusually adverse conditions. ' This averts tho estimated decrease of 200,000 acres. Tho net result of the food-pro-duction oampaign is thus an additional 550,000 acres of corn and potatoes, irrespective of tho still greater relative increase by small growers, who are estimated to have put down four times the usual; and this estimate is probably below the mark."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.Reuter.
