MILITARY SERVICE BOARD
MISCELLANEOUS APPEALS
The Third Wellington Military Service Board sat in Wellington yesterday. Mr. H. J. Beswick presided, ai.d with him were Mr. M. J. Mack and Mr. A. O'L. Coiisidine. Captain P. Baldwin was the military representative. Superintendent Tait appealed for exemption for Joeeph Henry. Richards, a permanent fire brigadesman <it- the Wellington Contra! Station. The board dismissed the appeal, and granted Richards leave till August 22. George Henry Galloway, farmer, of Pahautanui, was granted leave t>ll September 19.
George Bruce Cavell, motor-cycle mechanic, of Petone, asked for extension of time to enable him to settle his affairs. He was granted leave till September 19.
Messrs. J. J. Niven and Co., Ltd., appealed on the grounds of public; interest for Percy Leonard Kennedy, irunmoiilder, Hataitai. The board adjourned the matter for two months.
Aβ. appeal was made by the Patea Shipping Company for the exemption of l?errera William Armstrong, a chief eigiueer. The board adjourned Ihe cafe sino die. ; Private 1 , . S. Tyler, of the Thirtieth. Specialists, Featherston, asked for leave to make certain business iirrangements. Appellant was a voluntary iecruit .-■ml a member of the Second Division. He had three brothers eligible for service. Two were with the Fourth and oi?e with the Nineteenth Keinforcem.?nts. The board granted leave till October 17. The Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. F. S. Pope, asked the board to exempt Joseph B. Sairers, Dairy Produce Grader. The appeal was dismissed, and leave, till September 1!) was granted.
Tho lx>ard dismissed ihe r.npeal of Denns Brcen, shearer, of Wellington, and granted appellant leave till August 22. The appeal had been before the board previously, and it had been stated that appellant was engaged during s'-ino of his time in working for the Vacuum Oil Company.
The appeal of Timothy O'Neill, shearer and agricultural worker, was adjourned sino die.
Sydney Faulkner, carpenter and joiner, of Mortimer Terrace, claimed c-.xwiiption on tho ground of hardship. He stated that he was tho sole surviving son of his parents, who were growing old. His brother had died at the front. Tho board adjourned the case sine die. but will review this decision before Ibo Second Division is called up.
Joseph Knowles, bootmaker, Ngaio, was ordered to go. into camp on August 22 Joseph William Fletcher, architect smA building contractor, Lyall Bay. failed to appear, and the board dismissed his appeal.'. The board adiourned tho ense -.'f J>nis P. Kelly, furniture manufacturer. Marjnribanlra Street, till September 19.
William Percy Shires, a married man, employed as a wharf labourer, askei , for two months' time. He was allowed till Sentember 19.
The board allowed the anneal of Charles J. Polls, a foreign -nissionary worker, on the ground that }.e was not a reservist. The chairman said it was dear that in returning from India, where hn worked, appellant had not intended to s!:i>- in New Zealand. Captain Haldwin said that of course tho test was not only whether appellant intended to reside hero, but whether he did r»siile here. Compulsory residence caused ry the necessitv for registration was, however, not "residence" at all.
Tlio appeals of Jnmes Christie dristcnsen, accountant, and Alexander M'Donnld. of tlie 31st Specialist Company, Tauhereuiknu C'ninp. were dismissed.
The board granted ,in adjournment sine die in the cnse of T. 1?.. Hutton, Trnnsport Board employee, Wellington.
