Tho Eon. ,T. Barr, M.L.C., left for Cbristchurcli by the Maori Jast evening. Advico has just been received that Messrs. G. W. Albertson and A. Tyndall, of the engineering staff of tho Public Works .Department, Lave succeeded in passing the examination for associate membership of the Institution of Civil E-ngineers (England), and also that Air. Tynda.ll has been placed at the head of tho list of successful candidates, and in consequence has been awarded the Baylies Prize. This is the third or fourth, occasion, within the last six years upon which a New Zealand candidate has lopped the list in this examination, which is open to candidates from all parts of the world.
Mr. Frank Mcadowcroft, representative in New Zealand for Messrs. Cadbury Bros., intends to leave on a business trip to England, via Canada. Ho anticipate being able to return to Wellington before Christmas.
Mr. E. T. Wray, agency manager oi' (ho Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society in New Zealand, has left Wr-lliiij;-ton for Australia for a few months in connection with the business of the society.
SulvLieutenant L. H. Erelt. R.N.. of Auckland, was killed in a. flying accident on July 22 (according to a cable iaeesage received from the Admiralty). lieutenant Brett, who was 23 years of nge, was educated at King's College, Auckland, and after completing his course tlicro joined the. staff of the Auckland "Star." On the outbreak of war he joined the Expeditionary Force which captured Samoa. Later lie returned to Auckland and received his discharge. Being an experienced yachtsman and oxpert motorist, ho desired to enter tho British Naval Flying Corps, and proceeded to England, where- he enlisted in the Navy, with the rank of sub-lieu-tenant. Having completed- his course at the Plying School, he was sent on active service in the Mediterranean, and while there was engaged in BeveTal aerial combats, in which his machine woe hit, l)ii.t lie sustained no injury. Two Mothers of the deceased are serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces —one left with the 19th Reinforcements and another is in camp at Trentham.
Mr. Thomas Ireland, of Messrs; Jchn Reid and Sons, Ltd., Dnnedin, formerly a member of the Dunedin City Council's staff, lias heen appointed town cleric of the Borough of Ohakune.
Writing to a friend in Dunedin, Captain Stcnhoifcie, lato- of the Shackleton Expedition, sUtea that he, '"aptam Wersley (ex-master of the Endurance), and Dr. Cope arrived in England April, and reported for service. Br. Cope is with the Royal Naval Air Service, and Captains Wp'rsley and Stenhouse are on special service.
Last evening's Gazette states that tho. appointment of Mr. E. A, Craig, as Consul of Chile in Auckland, has been recognised provisionally. Mr. H. D. M'Kellar has been appointed Crown Land Commissioner for Marlborough.
Mr. John, F. Downey has been appointed a mines inspector for tho West Coast, MarlboroiiEfh, and Nelson districts. Mr. John W. Burgess was en Wednesday appointed an examiner of ships masters and mates.
Mr. E. G. Wood, of Simmer, has received advice from the Australian Base Records Office that his son, Corporal Louis Cecfl Wood, has been decorated by tho King with the Military Medal, ior conspicuous bravery on. the field of battle.
Captain Gavin Bullen Anderson, eldest son of Mr. Gilbert Anderson, end grandson of Mr. G. F. Bullen, Kaikoura, has been awarded the Military Cross. Captain Anderson was at Cambridge when war commenced, and joined the Imperial Army.' Hβ has twice before been mentioned in dispatches for marvellous bombthrowing. Ho was a left-handed Ixiwler in cricket, and throws his bombs with the left arm.
A sympathetic motion was passed by the City Council last evening in connection with tho death of Mr. Frank Godwin, for nine years station officer for the fire brigade at Thorndon. , The Mayor said that the late Mr. Godwin was an excellent officer, a man of genial disposition, and was very popular with the community at Thorndon. Councillor Barber also paid a tribute to the efficiency of the lato Mr. Godwin.
