STOKAGE FOR CHEESE

HARBOUR BOARD'S ACTION

NEW STORE FOR 50,000 CASES

At the meeting of the Harbour Board last evening the chairman (Mr. C. K. Dauiell) briefly recounted what had been done since tho last meeting with regard to providing temporary extra cool storage for cheese to meet the cond'tions consequent upon the shortage of tonnage. At the last meeting it was decided that if tho hoard were subsidised to ,tho ■extent of half the cost of the proposed g temporary cool store (to cost .£6500 alto■getlier)' it was prepared to go into tho work. Since that meeting he had interviewed the shipping people, and interested parties at I'almerston and Carterton who were warm in their appreciation of tho board's elforts in the past to cope with the storago \ question. They all thought the board's offer a good one, and were prepared to accept it. With Mr. J. G. Harkness he had seen the Prime Minister that morning, nnd as the result tho Government had decided to contribute half the cost (.£3250) of the store, tho same to be repaid within two years without interest. On tho receipt of tho confirming letter the chairman had instrucied the engineer to go right ahead and buy the material, as there was no time to be lost. It was impracticable to extend the present store, but good foundations were available elsewhere for tho store. The chairman said that the charges for storage in the new store would bo discussed in detail in committee, but the general idea was that the charges would consist of tho ordinary basis charges, plus an extra amount to bo charged until the money was repaid to the foveinment. Mr. W. Cable asked if it were proposed to call for tenders. The chairman said that he proposed to give a free hand to the engineer to go right ahead with the work. There was no time to call for tenders. He asked that his action in the 11.after bo approved, and this was done. Mr. J. Or. , Cobbe said it should bo placed on record that the board had done, all in its power to assist the community in the emergency. Indeed it had taken more interest than those more immediately concerned. The chairman added that the new store would accommodate 50,000 cases. During the evening a deputation from tho National Dairy Association was received by the board in committee. ,
