DEFENCE LEAGUE
LATE CAPTAIN S. A. ATKINSON HONOURED. At a meeting of members of the De-> fence League (organised by the late Cap. tain S. A. Atkinson for tho promotion of compulsory military training, and others associated with him in various patriotic movements), held on Saturday morning, the question of doing honour to his memory was considered. It was agreed that in view of the danger threatened bv the backsliding of certain politicians, "one suitable way of honouring Captain Atkinson's memory and of helping to carry out tho spirit of his last message would bo to revive the organisation for the express purposo of strengthening the hands of tho Government against the proposal that New Zealand should violate her pledges by gradually withdrawing from the lighting line and confining her patriotism in making war profits. . , The following motion was carried unanimously :-"That this meeting deplores the suggestions recently made in Parliament in favour of reducing the re. inforcements which the Dominion stands pledged to the Empire to provide: resenU such proposals as grossly insulting to the patriotism and the honour of the country, seeing that to carry them out would involve a breach of faith with tho men wo have sent to the front, and to our friends in the Old Country who a« bearing the brunt of the faght; thanks Sir .Tames Allen and Sir I'Tancis Bell tor their emphatic repudiation of these dishonouring suggestions; and assures Urn Government that tho people of New; Zealand are really in no mood to prostitute their honour by leaving tho delenca of their liberties to others" It was arranged thai.. Mr. A. it. Atkinson should act as ho'n. secretary pro tem.
