j Returned Soldiers' Hostel. At the monthly meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Hostel Committee, cordial appreciation was expressed of tha good work being done by the Berhamporo branch of the W.N.'K. in entertaining tho men. The lion, secretary reported that a mirror-topped chosa and draughts table is being raffled, and is at present on view at the Working Men's Club. It will be on view on tho Quay shortly. Women Police. The appointment of three women police in Melbourne was expected to be made early in tho month. The Chief Secretary decided last year that these appointments would be of considerable value, the officers to be engaged largely in the protection of women and young girls. Owing to the shortage of public money no appointments were mndo last year, but at a recent meeting of the Cabinet it. was decided that the female officers were necessary, and should bo appointed. Tho successful applicants will pitrudo public parks, railway station'?, and wharves, with the object, of protecting tho morals of tho younger women, and particular Attention will bo devoted to tho class whicli frequents hotels and wine saloons, and subsists on immorality. It is expected the policewomen will wear overalls of uniform pattern. Now South Wale,? policewomen wear dark brown overalls, and it is likely tho Victorian authorities will adopt a similar colour. Tho department, it is understood, does not intend to insist on tho wearing of hats of a distinctive typo. The women will carry their authority ill flic form of a lwdge, which will be worn under tho lapel of tho coat or overall.
The marriago took placo in St. Luke's Church, Christchurch, on Wednesday of Sergeant-Major William G. Cameron to Miwi Winifred Fuller of Ohristchurcli, formerly of the staff cf tho Union Bank. Tho bridegroom leaves tho Dominion shortly for tho front.
On Wednesday evening at Paluiorstpri Sister Mac Lean, who has been away on solive service for a year, was tho guest of honour at a social evening which was given by the District Nurso Guild. Sister Mac Lean relinquished her position as din. frict nurse to join tho staff of tho Mali eno on her second voyage, and when the Malieno returned to New Zealand Sister Mac Lean joined tho staff at Wal-ton-on-Tliames, where sho remained until her return to New Zealand some weeks ago. She has now taken up wt »'k again as district nurse in tho Palmorston area. The Mayor of Palmerston, Mr. Nash, on behalf of tho guild, welcomed Sister Mac Lean back to Palmorston, and referred to the good work she had done abroad, also the .excellent work of Nurse Darling, who had takeu her place vrhilo sho was awav. The Tier. It. Tnglis and Mrs. Tnglis, of Aucklaud. who arrived in Masterton early this week, were welcomed at a social evening which was given in Knox Hall on Wednesday. Mr. Inglis is to net as locum tenens to tho Rev. G. T. Brown while the latter is away with tho Kxpcditionary Force. A very hearty welcome was extended to-Mr. and Mrs. Tuglis, the Uev. L. Thompson, 11.A., occupying tho chair. Nurse Honeyfield has resigned tho position of matron of the Macarthy Convalescent Homo for Children (at Belmont), and Sister Smith has been appointed in her stead. Sister France, of the Hospital' Board's staff, has been placed in charge of tho Clifton Terrace Hospital (for old men). Mr. A. Varney, who is returning shortly after twelve months' absenco in England and France as supervising secretary of the Y.M.C.A., will have many interesting experiences to relate and important messages to deliver to parents and friends from the men he has met in the trenches. To enable him to meet tho mothers specially a gathering is being arranged at the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall this afternoon, to which all women aro invited. Mrs. D. Buick, sen., of Kairanga, is (says the "Mauawatu Daily Times") seriously ill, and her condition is causing her family grave concern. Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Gillies, of South Canterbury, are visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. l'rolove (Marlborough) are at the present time staying in Auckland. On Tuesday eyening the district council of the Workers' Educational Association in Auckland passed a resolution urging the Government to provide compulsory continuation classes for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 17 (states the "Star"). Mrs. F. E. Baume moved tho resolution, pointing out the urgent necessity for such a provision. Apart from the economic n.spect of the matter, the mover upheld that this measure should bo adopted from a moral and social standpoint. It was decided to ask tho Auckland labour unions to consider the matter. . *. Mrs. E. B. Smith, who died in. Christchurch early on Monday morning, was the wife.of Colonel G. J. Smith, who is at present on duty with tho New Zealand Forces ill England. Mrs. Smith was tho only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 11. • Dawson; she was born, in Christchurck and had resided there practically all her life. Sho married Colonel Smith in 1885, and leaves a family of two sons and ono daughter. Her sons are Lieutenant Douglas Smith, now at Featherstoa Camp, and Lieutenant It. Smith, of tho 3rd Dragoon Guards, who is at present at Codford Camp in England. "A woman can be young once, but youthful always." Sailors' Friend Society. At .a meeting of workers on Wednesday at tha Sailors' i'ricud Society, to discuss progress in the venture to raiso funds. to sparo the efl'ort and strain, cf bazaars, there was much enthusiasm, helpful sums abeing handed in or promised. Mr lloore, Missioner, who was in tha chair, outlined tho luivanco to date, und spoko feelingly of the ready help from many sources. Mr. R. C'. Eennor, hon. secretary, moved a vote of thanks to all who had assisted, and said it wa3 a notable and encouraging fact that such kindness had been shown to the work at this stage. Sir. Mason moved that tlio Press lie thanked for the important part they had laksn in the matter. Captain J. Macfarlane hoped that there would he a ready response to tho appeal before closing day .filly 31. The Musical Club at Khandallah gave a very enjoyable concert last evening in tho Khandallah Town Hall, in of Eed Cross Funds. Tho first part cf tho program mo consisted of musical items, tho club contributing a chorus; Mrs. Irwin and Hiss Finn, a pianoforte duet; Mrs. Tanner, Miss Mitscherlich, Mrs. Hicks, and Mrs. Burge, songs; Mrs. Ostler, a musical monologue; Miss Clark, a pianoforte solo; and Mesdames Burge, Ilicks, Porter, and Miss Brown, a quartette. Mesdames Burge and Porter also contributed a duct, and Miss Saunders some graceful fancy dances in costume. Tho second part of the programme consisted of a farce, entitled "Apartments to Lot," the characters being successfully taken by Miss Mitscherlich, Mrs. Tanner, Miss I'inn, Miss Brown, and Miss I'anslield.
Tho engagement is announced cf Miss C. C. Butler, of Hawke's Bay, formerly of Levin, to Mr. W. S. Death, of Levin.
