THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS IBt Glkncoe.l Hnndicapa for the Grand Notional Steeplechase. Grand National Hurdle Handicap, and Winter Cup aro due to mako thoir appearance on Friday. In framing the conditions for an Apprentices' Handicap tho V.R.O. have stipulated that tho budding horsemen aro not to ho permitted to carry whips. Tho Karamu representative Uladful heads the list- of hurdle winners for the racing season just closod. The consistent son of Birkonhono? (imp.)—Gladisla. has won over 2COO sovs, in stake money during the season. R. M'Seveney has been engaged to ride Art in tho Grand National Hurdles. Art's old pilot, D. M'Kay, is on his way to tho front. Art is a very pointed example of the maxim "horses for courses." At Riccarton he has bcon almost invincible, but on any other course ho gets ':catcn very easily. Plymouth is being regularly t-ohodled over the big fences at Riccarton, and tho Grafton golding will be a, runner at tho National meeting. He will be ridden in his engagements by It. M'Seveney. Crib is easily the best recruit to the steoplcchasc business this season. AtTrentham nothing could have been better than the way the St. Ilario gelding jumped, and evidently ho has been well schooled by his trainer, E. Trtlford. With Bisogne engaged, tho handicapper will not havo much trouble in fastening on a top-weight for tho Winter Cup. The chestnut has so far not won a mile race, but lie ran second in the Summer Cup at Ellerslio. At the Marton meeting thi-3 spring tho Trial Hack Plate will bo run over five furlongs, instead of seven as has been the case previously. This is the only five furlongs event on tho programme Nystad, who has been spelling, has again been taken in band by G. l'rico at Awapuni. Tho same trainor is also busy with a trio of tho Highden yearlings. Tho Hawke's Bay owner, Mr. H. E. Troutbcck, who contemplated sending Form "Up, Simonides, and Silver Tongue to Itandwick for the big spring fixture, has now abandoned the idea. The St. Simon horse Sarto, who was imported to this country by tho tons Hon. Georgo M'Lean, has been purchased by a North Island sportsman, and will next season stand the season at Awapuni. Sarto is l>est ltDown as tho sire of John Barleycorn and Art. Tho Auckland hurdle gelding Marconi is remaining at Trcnthajn until the end of tho Riccarton meeting. Now that it lias been decided to resume racing in England, the-Derby and Oaks will be run as usual—tho former event on July 31 and the Oaks on August 2. Both classics wiU be decided at Newmarket. It was freely stated in Wellington yesterday that neither El Gallo nor Penniless would bo sent south for the National meeting. The hurdle jockey R. E. Brown, who was injured when Iceberg fell with him in the Final Hurdles at Trentham, has recovered sufficiently to be ablo to leave the Hospital. A. Shearsby, with his horses' Oheciy Blossom and Sleightrof-Hand went south last night. The pair aro to race at Riccarton next month.
