PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

A meeting of the geological section of the Wellington Philosophical Society was held last evening. Exhibits were made as follow:—(1) Minerals from New Caledonia, nickel, copper, ores containing mercury, tantalum; (2) examples of concretions from Auckland Harbour; (3) views showing effects of Waimangu eruption. Dr. J. Allan Thompson spoke on the subject of the relative ages of the North Otago and 'South Canterbury limestones. He discussed the question of the numbbr of different limestone formations: whether or not they are all of one age. He illustrated his paper by exhibiting a large number of shells from the limestone localities in North Qtago and South Canterbury. Dr. 0. A. Cotton read a paper on: "The Correlation of the Terrestrial Covering Strata of Central Otago."
