CENSUS OF ELIGIBU3S. Following upon an announcement by the Federal Prime Minister relating to the employment of eligiblo single men in the Federal Public Service, a census is to be taken of all fit men of military ago in tho service. It is not oonsidered that tho census will affect to any extent the poruiauont employees of tho sorvico whoso positions aro secured by tho provisions of tho Public Service Act. There are, howover, about 17,000 temporary officers throughout the Commonwealth. Mr. Hughes stated definitely and clearly that, subject to tho provisions of tho Public Sorvice Act, no fit single man of military age will be omplovod in a position which can be filled with equal advantage to the nation by u returned soldier or ineligible man. The decision cf the Government "will therefore strike at tho tomporary hands whoso services can bo dispensed with at any time.
