THE GAS HOLD-UP

NO RESULT FROM CONFKRENXE. As the result of en accident at tlie Wellington Gas Company's works at Miramar, it was found necessary .to cut off the. city's supply of gas at 5 instead of ti o'clock last evening, a tact which caused additional inconvenience to many of the company's .clients. The mishap, however, could only be lamented,'and the step taken was an imperative one m order that the day supply might be maintained. There was no change in the situation reported from Miramar. Yesterday afternoon the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. Hagger) held a conference ivith the men who have stopped work at Miramar. After going into the matter thoroughly, the men made it understood that, they did not Jeel disposed to back down on the demands they had made, as they thought them quite justifiable under the existing conditions. 'Phis means that the deadlock continues. It is understood that police action against the men who have gone out is pending, the charge being a breach ot the War Regulations concerning interference with an essential industry. The Gas Company announces that the "as will be turned on Tit. 7.30 a.in today, and will be cut off at 5 o clock this evening. During the past two days there has been a »ang of electricians at work on the wharf, and electric lights have now appeared on the Queen's Whan and from Clyde Quay Wharf down to the Ferry AVharf. The wharves are being gradually electrically lit, and the Ivmg s AVharf and Glasgow Wharf are permanently fitted with electricity. It is not, however, intended to leave the new lights, put on since the gas trouble, cm the wharves mentioned, and when tue gas is back to normal these temporary lights will be removed.
