BRUSILOFF'S BLOW
ENEMY WEAKENS HIS WESTERN FRONT
EVENTS FORCE ACUTE CRISIS IN GERMANY,
AIR REPRISALS
PUBLIC OPINION MAY FORCE
THE GOVERNMENT
Brusiloff is etill determinedly hammering at the German line that blocks the way to Lemberg. We are told that this great effort is no mere, bluff, but a move in an important strategic offensive affecting ■ the other sreat war theatres. The Germans have been forced to weaken their new Western lines by. several divisions. Yet another attack has been launched by tho Germans at the French front, and again, with heavy loss to the enemy, it has spelt failure—complete and' disorganising. The general situation, both "with the German land, forces and the submarine warfare, has smitten German political circles with sufficient apprehension to impel the various parties, to "hold a secret session, at, which the Chancellor and tho military and naval chiefs have been present. The Kaiser subsequently gave- an audience to his political and war advisers. The nation's suspicion that all is not going well is expressed in the demand by the political party leaders for a clear statement. They received optimistic replies. Tho latest accounts of the German air raids in England disclose the fact that the eveiA provided tho spectacle of the greatest air buttle that has yet been fought over tlio Old Country, and tho public's demand for effective reprisals seems likely to force the Government to reconsider its policy in that regard. The American Government has proclaimed an embargo on tho export of supplies, which is calculated to tighten materially the strangulation blockade and bring the German public to a sharp realisation 'of the truth.
