Mr. Ernest E. Maginnity, of H.M. Customs, Cape Town, South A fried, hns left for overseas, having joined tho S.A.T. Born in Wellington, he went to South Africa Rt the beginning of the Boer war. joining Brabant's Horse, and ultnnntely becoming captain in the Midland Mounted Rides. At the end of hostilities ho determined to make South Africa his home, and entered the Government Service in 1903.
Lieutenant E. F. Reeves, who is included in the list of recipients of the Military Cross, is the son of Mr. F. K. ■Reeves, of the "Evening Post" staff. Before enlisting he was a member of the Public Trust Office stuff and held a commission in the Territorials. Me is an "old boy" of St. Patrick's College, and an ex-champion ot the Brougham Hill Tennis Club.
Mr. It. W. Dalton, British Tirade Commissioner, hos returned from Hawera, wl:ere ho directed the exhibit of British goods at the Hawera Winter Show.
Mr. Duncan Ttntherford, the well-known North Canterbury piisCnralist,, and brother of Mr. A. W. Ituthsrford, exM.P., died somewhat suddenly at Christchurch yesterday afternoon. Ho entered a private hospital on Sunday, suffering from an internal (rouble. News lias been received that Lieutenant Inn B. Cruickshank (son of Mr. Alex. Cruickshank. of Otorohunga, and nephew of Mr. J. D. Cruickshank, AVellington) hns been promoted to a captaincy. Captain ' Cruickshank left with tho Main Body as a member of the AVellington Mounted Rifles, and is now in Palestine.
Mr. V. It. Meredith, who ns one of the Crown Law solicitors has done sterliag work for tho Department, has tendered his resignation from tho Government service, having accepted a partnership in the old-established, legal 'firm of Hesketh and Richmond, of Auckland. Mr. Meredith is very well known throughout Now Zealand. He was bora in Auckland, and wns educated at the Auckland Grammar School. After leaving echool he entered the Customs Department, and during tho time ho was stationed m Wellington eamo to the .front in the world of athletics as a v representative footballer, maintaining an interest in the ganie long after ho had ceased to be an active participant. After being some years in the Customs Department ho took up'tho study of law, and eventually resigned from the Department and became associated with Mr. R. B. Williams in Wellington. About six years ago he entered into partnership with Mr. Wntson, now Assistant Judge and Crown Prosecutor at Apia (Samoa).' When, the war broke- out Mr Watson volunteered, and left tor Samoa with the First Now Zealand lwpeditionary Force. Mr. Meredith practised solus for a time, and some two years nnd three months ago accepted the 'post of Crown Solicitor. In that capacity he has done good work in the Court, and quite recently he conducted the big case in Auckland against the go. slow"'coal miners. Mr. Meredith, has also been known in Wellington as a very fine performer in amateur opera, and haa to his credit several dignified and charming performances in light baritone rples. Mr. Meredith will leave for Auckland aa soon as his place in the Crown Law Department can be filled.
