THE WELLINGTON CLUB. Tho Wellington Chess Club's annual "I'otJierick" tourney commences this week with seventeen entries, a larger number of competitors than usual. 'X'Jiero is also a gratifying increase in the number of ladder matches this season. Two matches have just been completed, and six more ara iu progress, as follow (the challenger's name is given first in each instance): W. Itackay v. W. E. Muson (run 2), Kclliug v. Still (rung 4), S. Gyles v. i'ouhy (runy 7), White v. Tyer (rung il), Hopkins v. Taylor (rung 15), and Dornbusch. v. Faulknor (rung 18). Tho two ladder matches recent completed resulted in Mr .Purchas gaining rung 6, but failing to capture rung 5. It is hoped that before tho end of tho year every one of tho twenty-one player 3 on the ladder will have been engaged in a match. Messrs. S. and W. Mackay, the club's vice-presi-dents, have kindly offered a prize iu connection with this sea-son's ladder contests. Pour new members have joined during tho past fortnight, eo that the club's "lean years" appear to bo cominpr 1o an end. The club, it may be added, was forty-ono years old on July 1, having been founded on July 1, 1876, as a, result of somo very successful canvassing by Mr. W. F. Bnrroud and tho late Mr. Hdward liecvcs, a well-known local merchant. WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. Tho above club's annual handicap tourney is proceeding with fifteen entries. Play commenced :i month ago, the best, tallies to dato being as follow:-Thoinpson, 4 wins, 1 loss; Wclton, 3H; Clark, 4-1; .Anderson. 2J-J; Purchas, 2J-11: Euo, 2-1; Harper, 2-2; and Ilervy, 2-2. WOKKING MEN'S CLUB. Tiis club's annual handicap tourneys arc noiv in full swing, there being sixteen entries for chess and sixteen for draughts. Iu the cfiess tourney Messrs. Uarnos, Faulkuor, Eton, mid Larking have so far fcored tho possible. Messrs. C'onllci - , Hennessey, Douglaa. Arden. and Wild we in close pursuit of the leaders. OHESS, ETC. Tho host scores to date in ths draughts tourney, which is a combined championship ami scaled handicap contest, are ne follow: Ericksou, 11* wins. J loss; ItanKon. 7J-J; Connor, 74-1; Colvillo, 6J-lii Larking, BJ-3J; Walkrr, 4-0; M'Phcrson, 3i—i: and Wright, 4-4.

' Sergt. J. Jf. WJ.lson, of "Lord Livcrpnol's Own," one of the club's strongest draughts players, and a rapidly-improving chessist, was recently wounded in France for the second time. His incapacity on this occasion is duo to a bullet -wound in 'ho thigh. Scrgfc. Wilson, who is also well known and very popular in local "Soccer" circles, carries tho best wishes of his comrades for an early recovery.
