LAUNCH ACCIDENT
BE AVE B-ESCTIB BY AN ELDERLY MAORI. By Telegraph—Press Association. Whakatane, July i. ✓ A sensational launch accident occurred at Whakatane Heads at one o'clock to-day. A Harbour Board launch, with Mr. Metcalf, the board's engineer, Mr. Mays, the foreman, and a number of ' other men, while returning from Whale Island, struck the outermost rowsat the entrance, throwing five workmen into the sea, which was breaking heavily. The'men clung to the rocks, and all were Tcscued ultimately, but the last two were in a perilous position-for over an hour, and were thoroughly exhausted. Attempts to reeoue the men by a boat from the lannch failed, bnt a. isattve, named Akima, 60 years age, swam through the breakers with a rope, and all were dragged ashore. The daring rescue was witnessed by a large crowd, including the Military Medical Board.
