POWERFUL STROKE TOWARDS LEMBERG ; OVER 8000 PRISONERS TAKEN HEAVY FIGHTING AT LENS .. DESPERATE ATTACKS fif THE ENEMY-. The eurtyrise of the war dispatches this morning is tlio Russian blow in Galicia. Very little has come through about this latest development beyond the fact that over 8000 prisoners have been taken, vrith much booty. A message from -New York puts tho captives at over 10,000, but this estimate, it need hardly be said, is not official. The Russian offensive, according to a message from New Yorlc, was promised by M. Keren.ski, the War Minister, three weeks ago. There are suggestions of a great German offer.6ive on tho Riga, front, to be doveloped, it is paid, under the. co-operation and support of the German Baltic. Sea Fleet. On .. the Italian front there are rumours of a great Austrian offensive in the Trontino, for which Italy is prepared. ' Nothing of material import has happened on the Western front. Tho British advance posts', after heavy . all night and day. fighting, have been driven in for a short distance. A telegram from' Sydney states that line interruptions are causing considerable delay in the 'transmission •• of war news.
