BRITISH GOODS AND DOMINION BUYERS

The exhibition of British-made goods now attracting attention at tho Hawera Agricultural and Pastoral Society's AVinter Show marks the beginning of what we may hope to sec develop into an active campaign. Its purpose- is to bring before the notice of the New Zealand buyer goods and manufactures of various kinds which he is in need of and to demonstrate to hini in the most effective manner possible the merits of the products of British industry. To tho energy and enterprise of the British Trade Commissioner, Mr. Dalton, the exhibition is due, and he is to be congratulated not. only on the success which has attended his efforts, but in the means he has adopted to attain tho ends aimed at. It was a happv inspiration which led him to lake advantage of the attractions afforded to country people, by agricultural and pastoral shows to bring 'under their notice British manufactures of use and necessity to the man on the land. -Those agents and importers who seized the- opportunity opened up to. them by "Mr. Damon's scheme will no doubt profit as they deserve to, and the farmers and others who support British industry by buying Britishmade goods will have tho satisfaction of knowing that in addition to their requirements being well served they will be assisting in the great Imperial task which lies ahead. But tho Hawera Show Exhibition, it may be hoped, is only the beginning of bigger things. These exhibitions, if conducted' on the right lines and adequately supported by the agents of British manufacturing houses and by tbe importers of Britishmade goods, .should prove of immense educational value to the New Zealand public. In the' coming trade war no effort should he spared to encourage the use of British-made goods in preference to others, and a-pa.rt from the sentimental side of the question it is necessary to this end that tho ' prospective buyer should be made to clearly understand that his needs .can be fully, and satisfactorily met by the output from the workshops of bis own countrymen. Now that a definite and successful start has beeu mado in this direction we may hopo to see tho plan devised by Mr. Damon for the Hawera Show followed up "by similar exhibitions at other shows and also extended to tho_ cities of tho Dominion as opportunity offers.
