9 FATAL QUARREL AT RAUMAI MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS SON : . - : By Telegraph—Press Association. .. Palmerston North,. .Tune 30. A tragedy occurred at Raumai, between Ashhurst and Pohangiiia, yesterday. A farmer named George Jackson, •Tesiding with; his wife, and family, is alleged to have stabbed his eighteen-year-old son, Thomas, with a. knife during a -quarrel which arose in the house at dinner. Then, realising what he had done, Jackson saddled his horse and galloped to Ashhurst. Medical assistance was pro. cured, and the young man was brought to the Palmerston North Hospital. His condition became worse last: night, and the police were communicated with. Jackson was arrested at ah hotel at AsliJiurst, and was brought to' Palmerston North early this morning. The young . man. gradually became worse, and died about 8 o'clock this morning. ■ i Jackson appeared before Mr. Ken-rick, S.M.,,thiß morning, and was charged with assault and with stabbing and killing his son, Thomas Jackson. , Sub-Inspector M'Kinnon asked for a remand for . a veek, which was granted.

(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) " Wanganui, July 1. ; Jacksdn is-a very aid resident of tho district. He received remittances from "England,, and settled at Eaumai about ' twenty years Ego, marrying a member of an ol,d Ashhurst family. Later they went ■ to England, where they resided for about -ten years, returning about four or'five ' years ago. It is stated that there had been frequent family quarrels. The vie;tim of Friday's occurrence was the third -■"■'oiVsix children. * When brought before "the Court it was :*een that the accused had a badly bruised eye, and was iu a most agitated and .nervous condition. He was charged as follows:— ' (1) That'on'June 20, 1917, at Hamnai, he did assault one Thomas Jackson, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. (2) Thai; on Juno 29, 1917, at Baumai he did kill one Thomas Jackson by stabbing him with a knife. ' On the second charge being read the . accused almost collapsed,' but supported himself by clinging to the rails of the dock. , '.«•-.
