CITY BURGLARIES

HUNDREDS OF POUNDS INVOLVED

AN ARREST MADE

For several months past a series of •warehouse, shop, and hotel burglaries has been perpetrated in Wellington, and clothing and liquor to the value of several hundred pounds stolen. Yesterday afternoon Detective-Sergeant Cos, Detectives Mason and Carney, and Plain-clothes Constablo Black arrested a man named George Cooke, an ex-barman, on five charges of breaking and entering and theft. \

The charges are:—' On or about May 1, 1917, at Wellington, he did break and enter the Hotel Cecijand steal seventeen bottles of whisky (value «£G 165.), the property of James M'Parland, licensee.' On or about Mayl-t he. did break and enter the Masonio Hotel and 6teal twentyfive bottles of whisky and other liquor (,£l4), the property of L. P. O'Brien, licensee. •

On June 9, did break and enter ihe shop of Georgo ond Kersley and steal 11 ladies' coney seal overcoats (.£100). ' On June 36, did break and enter thl TvaTehouse of Goojlsrill, Johnson, and Co, and steal twonty-fivo tins of benzine ana oil .(,£24). On June 18, <lid break and enter the ■warehouse of Richard C. Kinvig and' steal thirty-eight Tolls of dress and cloth material (£135). , , The police report 1 that the whole of the cloth has been recovered, also ten of the ladies coats, the benzine, the oil, and the liquor. Cooke is a young man, apparently about thirtv years of age. He will appear in the Slagistrates Court to-day. The thefts alleged to have been stolen made an imposing display at tho police station; coats worth ton guineas each do not find their way to the detectives' office eveTy day. ' ; The thefts have caused the detective staff a considerable amount of work, and It was only after long watching and patient investigation that a clue was secured. SHOPLIFTING TWO WOMEN ARRESTED. . Detective-Sergeant Rawle arrested two women yesterday on charges of the theft of coats to the value of .£26 17s. 6d., the property of James Smith, Ltd., Cuba Street. The whole. of the property has been recovered. The- women will appear before a Magistrate to-day.
