FRENCH HEAVILY ATTACKED

« TABLES SPLENDIDLY TURNED TO ADVANTAGE ALL-RUSSIA CONGRESS VOTES FOR IMMEDIATE ATTACK , THE ITALIANS BRILLIANT OPERATIONS IN. THE TRENTINO

The French and Italian fronts furnish the main interest in tho war theatres to-day. On the French, front the Germans, launching a powerful massed attack at Vauxaillon, seized in the first shock of. assault certain positions. The French gallantly withstood the onset, inflicted severe losses, and then brilliantly turned the tables by their counter-attacks, gaining 300 yards depth of ground on that portion of the front. On the British front tho operations have been in the nature of local actions, raids, and tho like. The Italians in the Trentino have won several positions of great tactical value, and incidentally blown the garrison of a mountain position to oblivion by the firing of a powerful mine. Two points of interest in tho 'itiussiiin situation are the unanimous decision of the All-Russia Congress of Soldiers and Workmen for an immediate offensive on the battlo front, and a serious strike on tho Petrograd-Moscow railway. Tho submarine menace is still grave, says tho "Times," and no definite counter-weapon has yet materialised from the researches of tho experts. America is making a gigantic effort in the construction of aircraft, and it is said that when her fleets are ready a great invasion of Germany will take place.
