It begun in mild nor«;-play and hnisued up in a stand-up fight. Percy Bernard Ovcreud was charged that on June 11 Jio (lid steal three rolls of duck, valuu £46, tho property of \V. Wiggins and Co., Ltd., Lauibton Quay. Tho tacts of the caso wore that accused, under tho assumed namo of James Bmith, wroto to Frank George Head, saddler, of I'ctone, ollerlng to sell • three rolls of duck at 2s. 3d. a yard. Read agreed to buy and received a further communication from J. Bmith stating that the goodß wcro being sent. Two days later an invoice was received for £32. Tho goods wcro delivered in due course. Bcforo and after receiving tho goods witness communicated with/ Wiggins and Co.. who instituted inquiries, and discovered their loss. Accused, when arrested, made a complete confession of his guilt. Acoused had been in tho employ of Wiggins and Co. sinco February, 1911, and was a very satisfactory employoe. Accused, who was represented by Mr. 11. F. O'Leary, pleaded guilty, and was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentence. Bail was allowed in £25, arid one surety of £25. A remand for a week was granted in tho caso of Sydney Daniel Richardson, charged with assaulting Peroy Flynn, thereby causing actual bodily harm. Chief Detective Boddam stated that the man assaulted was' not abio to appear. Ho further stated: that the injuries wore not serious, and it was probable that' tho charge would bo reduced to one of common assault. Mr. H. F. O'ljeary appeared for acoused and asked for bail, which was allowed iu £15, a'nd one surety of £15.
David Eno was remanded to Monday on bail of £10, and one surety b{ £10, on a charge of theft o£ a brief bag Tallied at, 55., the property of Samuel Speight, and underolothing valued at 10s,, the property of Arthur Grimmer.
A plea of guilty was entered by Jimmy Taure, a half-casto Maori, to two charges (1) breaking and entering the warehouse of.- the Stewart Timber and Hardware Company, Limited, and (2) stealing therefrom a cash-box and contents of tho value of £7 4s. Acoused was committed to tho Supreme Court for sentence. Arthur Miles was charged tbat on June 13 he did steal £32 in money, tho property of Eanßl Thompson, a returned Maori soldier. According to the- evidence the accused accompanied tho Maori to the Post Office, and directed, him to the Savings Bank. Tho Maori withdrew about £40, and on coming out of tho Post Offlco was met by tho accused, who asked for the loan of £1, and soon afterwards requested » further loan. The tsvo knocked abo.ut town and then engaged a taxif and drove as far as the Caledonian Hotel. 'The Maori, tho accused, r/id the taxi-driver went in and had a drink, and tho Maori then produced n- roll of notes, totalling £32. and asked tho barman to take caro of tho money. Tho accused snatched up the money from the counter, went out and re-entered tho taxi. Ho was asked by tho barman if he hud taken the money, but denied tho matter. Several witnesses wh.o were in the bar at the time testified to seeing Miles snatch up tho money, and as one witness, a waterslder, put it, "made a trot for the door."
Accused pleaded not. jruilty and was committed lo (.lie Supremo Court for (rial. TJail was allowed in £75 and one surely of £75.
For insobriety Edward Morau was convicted ant) lined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment.
