GERMAN ATTEMPT ON INFANTRY HILL
, SUCCESSFUL ATTACK BY THE FRENCH
London, June 18. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "Early this morning the enemy delivered a strong local attack on the positions we .captured ,on June 14, eastward of Monchy le l'reiux. After severe fighting wo' wero compelled to fall back from ' advanced posts established in front of our main new position on Infantry Hill, -which we still hold. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "Wo took prisoners during the enemy's failure t'o rcain his positions on Infantry Hill. Our troops gained ground slightly in tho direction of Warneton. There was nil-day mutual artillery work in the neighbourhood of Lens and northward of Armenticres. The air lights yesterday were a"ain in our favour. Military oxperts predict that, the Germans will be compelled to fall back because the Ypres Canal and tho River Lys are at tho enemy's rear, and tho British artillery is ceaselessly shelling the bridges across which they just bring (heir supplies. A German official report states: "Thero was lively artillery fighting on the Yscr Canal on both sides, at Ypres, tho Lys River, and also between La Bassee and tho Sensco Brook. British reconnoitring advances south-westward of Warneton eastward of Vermelles, and the neighbourhood of Loos, failed. Three British attacks eastward of Croisilles failed. A successful German enterprise resulted m increased French artillery activity in the neighbourhood of Corny, and also on the largo sectors of the Aisne front and Western Champagne"—Airt.-N.Z.
