OANTBRBCEY CLUB V. .WELLINGTON GLUIi. The cnalleugo received by the local club from the Canterbury Club has a distinctly Old English flavour about it. Twelve Canterbury knights are shown dad in armour, ouch ouo mounted on a charger and. bearing a lance. Tho inscription underneath is as follows:Ye Challenge. Vndcrslandingo that mveh flonovro ' and Advanccniento ys to be gained vn •ve meetiuge of ye Noble Defenders 'of lyelhngtonne yn «nnbat, we, on behalf of yo Twelve Knighta of Oantorbvry wovld seeko a jevstiug to svoh an ende, to tako place on yo Cheqvcred Field dvring this monthe of Jvne, yn vo Yeare of Ovr Lord One Thovsand Nine Hvndrcd and Seventeen, ®ty- Si ;;. E °,v- liOVoll-Smith (Arras) (bed.) .Sir Hans Kcnnodfr (Arms) (hgd.) Sir Thomas Jiawkins (Arms) Tho Wellington Club's reply is appropriately in harmony with tho above challenge, A King is depicted in defiant attitude, having accepted the gage of battle on behalf of tho local Knights. Ho and his Queen aio each attended by a Bishop and a Knight, a., castle being in the background on either side of the picture, which, has been splondidly drawn and painted by Mr. G. A. Tycr, the local hon. secretary, the colours of the various robes, etc., bemg greatly admired. If tho "jousting" referred to above is to Ho worthy of these courtly preliminaries there should be some tough, battles. The match commences on Saturday at 6.30 p.m., and is to be continued on the following Saturday. The Wellington team will bo located in the ■Y.If.CA. rooms as usual. There has been very little match jilay in Wellington during tho-past few years, and in this rcepeot the Canterbury team has a pronounced advantage. The telegraphic match between tho Wanganui and Mastcrton Clubs has also been fixed for the next two Saturday evenings. Here, too, an enjoyable and closely-contested match is looked, forward to. Consideration of Mr. Barnes's motion regarding the question of assisting the adjudication boards in their difficult labours hy sending nn analysis where the winning ior drawing of an unfinished game is an obscure matter, and the strongest line of play is "well below tho surface" wasadjourned till the September meeting. A vote of thanks to Mr. Barnes for presiding- cloaed the meeting. \ i Women in Architecture. Amoiis the problems of the day i.w avenues for women's ivctivities are constantly being opened up. There was some talk lately, of the possibility of women Booking entrance into the architectural profession, and now that a chuir of architecture is to '1» established, at the Sydney "University, it is only reasonable to suppose that young women of artistic taetes and with u natural aptitude lor homeplanning will in a few years find ;i ready uutlet for their architectural and decorative abilities (states a writer in the ''Sydney Morning Herald"). Tbo womart's (ouch in interior decoration is exemplified. in an interesting manner by an announcement that onu largo Mew -York hotel ha 3 opened tho way for women interior decorators by inviting one of the craft to furnish and decorate its nsw roof restaurant, Tho result is said lo be decidedly pleasing. "This is snid to be the first time," remarks a Boston journal, "that an hotel proprietary has called upon a woman to dike a hand in the interior decoration of its premises, and women consider it ait excellent sign. They • are hoping that raoro such opportunities will follow. When they do get a clianco to take over tho general furnishing and interior decoration of hotels, and they consider this their legitimate business and one of tho newer openings for women, they promise (hat. they will drive out the dull monotony of man-made ornamentation, and nt the same time introduce a continuity that will make for harmony and comfort."
