Cast:— Shamus O'Brien Maurice Tuohy Shadrick O'Piuu Victor Paul Leslie M'Murrough Edgar Keima Sir Eeginald Daro George Henderson Father Malone \y. J. Coulter Colonel Olaverly Fred Lawrence « arry W' ; - • ' Fran k Neil Mary Dououghmoro Kathleen Arnold M ™ ; ,°' Bri £n • Mabel Hardlngo Kathleen O'Eeilly Biddio Hawthorne Nora Malono Alice Eode "Shamus O'Brien," an Irish melodrama, the authorship of which-has been lost in tho mists of tho past, was porformed at the Grand Opera Houso last evening by the Brandon-Oremer Company. It is a somewhat loosely-written story of the troubles of Ireland in '98, with Shamus OBnen as tho hero and central figure. He ie the head and front of tho "Green Ribbon Boys," who aro giving the mili- , tary a lot of trouble. Tho red coats arc naturally hold in high disfavour, no one more so than Captain M'Murrough, who is a rival with Shamus for tho hand and heart of Mary Donoughmore. She does her beat to shield tho picturesque rebel but the usual informer affliofs tho neighbourhood in tho person of Shadrick 01 inn, who steals certain inoriminating papers from Mary's home and uses them against Shamus. who at length is indicted and sentenced to death. As it would never do to allow the hero to die bo Ignominious I a death, it is arranged that on a certaiu occasion Shamus saved tho lord Lieutenants life, and is rewarded with a ring the production of which earns for him the Kings pardon, and leaves tho way clear for a happy reunion with tho girl of his heart. b

Mr. Maurice Tuohy cut a hnndsorao flguro as the bold Shamus. aDd acted with a restraint and refinement worthy of a better play. Another sound pcrformanco was that of MrTWo,. Paul as th™ ras° cally Shadnck O'Flnn, who on his makeup and general habit could not pass for anyone but the despicable tool of the Sassanach. Mr. George Henderson mado a presentable Sir Reginald Dare, and Mr E. Kenna was Captain M'Murrough. Miss Kathleen Arnold was sympathetic as Mary Donoughmorc; Miss Mabel Hardlngo infused great spirit into the role of Shamus's mother, and as that bright-cyed colleen Kathleen O'Reilly, Miss Biddie Hawthorne was alert and attractive. An internolatcd scene gave a number of clever children t.bn chance to display their vocal paces in a picturesque setting. "Shamus O'Brien" will bo played this and to-morrow evening, and the season will conclude on Saturday with a revival of "East Lrnne."
