DTJNEDIN PROTESTS AGAINST LOSS OF NIGHT TRAINS.

A public meeting was held to-day to consider the refusal of the Eailway Department to run late trains on suburban lines oxcept on Saturday nights, and wa3 largely attended. The attitude of the DeI partment was severely criticised, especially the refusal to run late trains on M'idays. Speakers pointed out that goods trains ran nightly and they would be contented if passenger coaches could be put on to these. It was decided to urgently request that the suburban train at 930 nightly be-reinstated, and that the daily services be curtailed as far as . necessary to enable this to bo done. The Mayors of Dunedin, Port Chalmers, West Harbour, and Greon Island dispatched a tele-ram of protest supporting the resolution. A joint telegram to the same eftect was sent, by Messrs. Sidey Sta- #?' slclßOn>5 IclßOn > and Walker, M.P.'s. Ine Sooiety of Carpenters and Joiners has. written to the Minister protesting against the suspension of night trains
