The- State of New • York is taking a census of residents aged from Iβ to 50, asking for information as to their specinl industrial capabilities. The census will automatically enrol thoso from 18 <to 45 as liable to serve in the Home Militia if called on. LORD NORTHOJFFe" IN AMERICA OUTLINES HIS MISSION. New York, June 11. Lord Xorthcliffe, interviewed on his arrival, said: "i'he War Cabinet has designated me head of 'the British War Mission to the United' States;' ;sind has instructed me to endeavour Id co-ordinate the work of British organisations hero. We are charged with the task of supplying our war needs." The New York "Tribune" eays that •Britain could not. have made a better choice than Lord Northcliffe, who is admirably adapted for the work of co-or-dinating the industrial and economic effort of Britain and the United States.— A.us.-N.Z. [San Domingo, or Haiti, is the second largest of the island republics Jβ the West Indies. On June 8 an Amsterdam message, quoting a Berlin report, stated that the Haitian Minister in Berlin had demanded compensation for lives and trade losses due to submarines, and also guarantees against futnro attacks. Tho German Government sent its Ministe-r his passports, alleging as a reason the unusual form in which the demand vas made.!
