IRISH CONVENTION

THE HOPE OF SETTLEMENT TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MAJOR REDMOND (lieu. June V>, 5.15 p.m.) London, June 11. In the House of Commons. Mr. Lloyd George (tho Prime. Minister) said that tho present condition of Irish politics had made a conference smaller than 101 representatives impossible. As the Government desired to secure th« representation of the everyday life of Ireland, it was inviting tho county councils and county boroughs to send their chairmen. The Government also was inviting five members from each political party, four members of tho Roman Catholic Church, (ho Anglican Archbishop, and tho l'resbyterimi Moderator, and five representatives of Irish trade unionism. Tho Government would not choose their fifteen nominees until the other names had been choseu. Tho Government, also, was prepared to nominate the chairman of tho Convention. Mr. Lloyd George closed with a warm tribute to the. memory of the late Major William Redmond (killed in action). Though lit his ago, he said, he could not be expected to endure the dangers and hardships of war, he had sought peril and privations with cheerful courage.

Mr. Aequith and Sir Edward Carson paid similar tributes. Sir Edward Carson said that tho Belfast Unionist Conference had accented his advice and decided to enter the Convention. Major ■Redmond had died side by aide with the Ulsfflrmen.
