WELLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT
ME. F. H. BAKE WELL APPOINTED CHIEF INSPECTOR. Mr. F. IT. Bakerell, M.A., has been appointed Chief Inspector of Schools in the Wellington Education District, vico Mr. T. R, Fleming, M.A., LL.B., recently transferred to Otngo. Mr. Bakewell's appointment will be a. very popular one in the dietrict, as he is universally liked and respected by the teachers for tho fairness of his criticisms and his human understanding.' Mr. Bakewell has had a picturesque career. He was "born in tho West Indiee, his father, the lateDr. Bakewell, being at ono time ActingGovernor. Tho. family afterwards came to New Zealand, and Dr. Bakeweil practised his profession in Dunedin. Mr. •BakewcH completed his studies at the Boys' High School in Dunedin, and subsequently engaged in farming pursuits. During the Maori troubles of that period he joined tho Armed Constabulary. His ambition was for a military career, but an accident which permanently disabled ono of his hands put that out of the-question. He entered the teaching profession on tho lowest run? of tho ladder as teacher in chargo of a small aided school in the Marlborough district, studying meanwhile for his decree* Ho was sulwcqiictitly appointed lirst assistant master at Thorndon, and some years later was promoted to tho position of headmaster of the Greytown, School. From there ho joined tho Wellington District Inspectorate ns nssistaiitinspector, bein? then associated with Mr. Robert Lite and Mr. Fleming. On the retirement of Mr. Lee, Mr. Fleming became Chief Inspector. Mr. Bakowell's leaching- exnerience in such a comprehensive field has Riven him a sympathetic understanding of the difficulties under which teachers sometimes have l» labour, but withal he it? a ehrcwd observer and quick to delect: inefficiency*
