MAKARA AFFAIRS
COUNTY' COUNCIL MEETING,
Tho monthly mooting of tho Makara County Council was held yesterday. Councillor J. If. Haggerty occupied the chair, and thoro were also present Councillors if. J. Jlonaghan. A. J. Taylor, i\ If. Mcxted. S. Bryant, and Geo. llonlt. Tho Wellington City Engineer waited on tho council, at its invitation, and a- long discussion took place (in committed regarding tho Ngahauranga Gorje Eoad. A 6cherao was submitted by the council, and will in turn bo submitted to the Wellington City Council. The District Engineer of Railways wrote asking that a stream between Porlrua East bridgo and tho railway bridge be diverted, and that tho waterway to the main Porirua bridge bo increased. As tho portion of the stream in Question lies wholly on private property, tho council decided that it was unable to entertain any idea of diverting tho stream. Legal advico is to be obtained as to tho council's power to sell spoil on the roads under its jurisdiction, especially roods near tho seashore. In tho meauwhilo all permits issued for the removal of spoil have been cancelled.
The Ohief Health Oillcer reported upon tho conditions at a largo pig farm near Jonnsonvillo, and recommended that ho bo given permission to issue seventy-two hours' warning to have certain works car Tied out. Tho Health Department advised the council to enforco its by-law regarding tho keeping of pigs on small sections. Slaughterhouse permits were granted to tho Wellington Meat Export Company and tho Wellington Farmers' Co-opcrativo Bacon and Meat Packing Co. The road foreman recommended that several important works be attended to, and tho moro urgent of these are to be commenced <is soon as possible. It was decided that the consent of the whole counoil Trill in future have to bo obtained beforo a roadman can leave his wore to do private work. Previously one councillor could give tho required permission. It was decided that after Juno 30 all casual labour in the Makara, County bo dispensed with. Provision is to bo made regarding urgent casual labour. A romit from tho Manakau County Council that counoila should have power to compel owners to removo willows and other obstructions from natural watercourses was supported.
