THREEPENNY TRAM FARE
4 TO COME INTO FORCE TO-MOEEOW. From to-morrow threepence is to be" the minimum fare to be charged an adult for a ride on the city electric trarocars on Sundays, the object being to reduce as far as possible tho number of car 3. to be employed on the first day of the week, and, as a natural corollary, tho power necessary'to drive them. As thew mav be misapprehension as to what tbo "threepenny fare" means precisely, aDominion reporter Bought enlightenment ■ from the Traffic Manager and Engineer. (Mr. M.'CabW yesterday. Mr: Cable, explained that threeDence was. the mininnVm fare for adnlts, but no more than tho ordinary fare' would be charged those , riding over three, four,' or five sections. For cample, the fare -from Ccurtenay Place to Lvall Bay-was 3d. -ordinarily, ; and would-be the same to-morrow, but supposing a person was' coming . from: Lyall Bay and wished to. ride to Oriental llav, it would cost 6d. (3d. to Courtenay Place and 3d. for the one section, to Oriental Bav). but the fare would.- at the: same time, onlv be Id. from Lyall Bay to the Lambton Station, as that was a straight run through on the one car, whereas-a person-, wishing to travel to Oriental Bav would-havo to .transfer, at. Conrtenay Place. That is one-of the anomalies of the neworder to be -instituted- to-morrow, but one which cannot bo avoided. without introducing an- elaborate and cumber-; some transfer ' system that would" enly operate on one day iri the week. Holders of concession tickets will m able to--use those tickets in any manner thev please. That-is to say, the holder of 'a two-section concession ticket may ride four sections for two .punches;, the holder of a three-section concession ticket may ride one, two. or three sections for the same price, viz.,.' 2 l-7d. _ . The threepenny fare to be instituted to-morrow -does not apply, to special cars,, on which the fares will be as usual fid. for adults and 3d. for children: Tho service to bo maintained on the main rentes will be a twelve instead of a ten'minnte one. except on the Karon line, where a ten-minute service will be run as usual. „.,-,-, a- — The saving t« be effected by the n»w arrangement will, it is hoped, mean the cutting out of the extra cars. The public should understand that the published time-table onlv renresents a skeleton service after all." and that,, when the-occa--fion warrants, cars run in be weon the. time-tabled cars in considerable, numbers At times there are .50 per cent. more car* running over the main routes, nf the citv tha" are accounted for in the time-table. Tt is anticipated-that by increasing the fares, the tramway au'thnrilies. will be able to reduce, -those extra cars'to a : minimum. '
