' It whs mentioned last week that a wellknown firm had refused a subscription on the grounds tnat tho inspector had ■ approached them regarding tho state of a horse.- The secretary reported yesterday that ho and the inspector had visited the manager of the firm in question, who had informed them that the cause was the one that had been suggested, namely, that tho inspector had approached him regarding a horso vrhich was suffering with rheumatism. Ho admitted that the horee had been suffering, and thzi it had on the day the inspector approached him, drawn a load of three tons, and yot he considered that ho could look after tho horses belonging to the firm, and was not going to allow any society to interfere with his horses. He had therefore discontinued any subscription. Tho society decided to write regretting tliat he took such a stand. Tho inspector reported that during tho fortnight ho had dealt with eleven cases of cruelty to animals, and one man had been successfully proceeded against in court.
