SUBURBAN HOTELS
LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETS. The Hutt Licensing Committee met at the Courthouse, Lower Hutt, yesterday, Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presiding. The other members of' the committee present were Messrs. J. W. JPEwan, John Colton, Herbert Ryder, John Cudby, and M. W. Welch. Mr."Riddell said the report of the police on the conduct of the hotels was generally good. There were some hotels that required repairs, and these repairs would have to be put. in hand. With respect to the Central Hotel, Petone, there was complaint against the conduct of tho persons who frequented the hotel. It was stated that bad language had been heard in the street. It was the duty of tho licensee to take all yineans in his power to see that his hotel was properly conducted, and it should be known to every licensee that persons using bad language in a hotel must lie ejected, or steps taken to prevent its recurrence. None of the other hotels had any such objection against them.
Mi-. Young, who Appeared for tho licensee (F. G. Warring) said that the licensee had done his best to stop the use of bad language In his hotel, but found it almost impossible to control the customers. The men who frequented the hotel was accustomed to the use of bad language, it was their ordinary talk, and they did not regard it as bad language. There ; being no objections, the following licenses were granted:—Bellevue Hotel (George Anyon); Central Hotel, Petone (F. L. Simpson); Grand National Hotel, Petone (A. A. Richardson); Provincial Hotel, Upper Hutt (Mary Ellen Young): Railway Hotel, Lower Hutt (It. T. Bland); Taita Hotel (William Moore); 'i'renthani Hotel (Richard Ouinn); Victoria Hotel, Petone (Rosetta Wells); Empire Hotel, Petone (H. J. Palmer). Consideration of the renewal of the license of the Family Hotel. 1-ower Hutt (A. J. Munro). was adjourned to .1 innc 27, in order that repairs immediately required may be completed. Mr. Riddcll stated that the, committee was of opinion that the hotel oughttobe rebuilt, but would not press the matter. With respect to the Central Hotel, Petone,. Sergeant Bird stated that the place was in a deplorable condition, and a new building was urgently needed. It was stated on behalf of the owners that immediately on receiving the police report steps 'were taken to effect repairs, and those repairs were being made at the present time. Consideration of tho graiitimr of the license was deferred to .Tune 27, and it was intimated that the elected members of the committee would visit the hotel in the meantime and judge of the condition of affairs for themselves.
