PROPOSAL TO RATSE RUNNING ■CHARGES. A clause in the Tramways Committee's report caused some surprise to oue or two of the councillors present at the meeting of the City Council last night. The Tramways Committee recommended that on account of increased operating expenses an increase of one halfpenny per car mile bo made in respect of tho Karori and Miramar tramways.. At present tho Karori' Borough pays Vs. 3d. per car mile,' and tho Miramar Borough la. •per car mile. , The Mayor said that the cost of operating the trams had increased ix> such an extent that the question must bo considered. Indeed, it should have been considered some time ago. The fad; was that this increase would do no more than restore the tramways undertaking to a proper position again.
