Misg Stott wns in black crepe do chine with a black picture hat, and carried a bouquet of golden coloured chrysanthemums and auUiuin foliage. For Red Cross Funds. Thoroughly successful from every point of view was the matinee musicale arranged by Mrs. Arthur Myers, with the assistance of Mrs. P. -J. Nathan, and held nt Mrs. Myers's residence in Hobson Street yesterday for the benefit of lied Cross ■ funds. A large number of guestd wero present, including Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, who. unon her arrival, was presented with a bouquet of violets by a small daughter of Mrs. Myers. The drawing-room had practically .been turned into a concert chamber, with a small platform nvrhnged with palms and foliage at tho further end, for tho benefit "of tho contributors to the programme arranged for the afternoon. Assisting with this were Madaniß Greta Losfcrlin, Miss Esther Fisher.' Mr. Harold Harcourt, Mrs. Myers flnd -Mrs. Nathan. Shortage of Nurses, Of late thero appears to have been a shortage of! trained nurses in Australia owing lu tho demands made by the war upon their services lor overseas requirements. In a recent issue of the "Argue" appears the following suggestion to ioduco this shortage-.—"ln ordinary eircuuistances, as tlio supply of jyurses ie always equal to tho demand, tho question as to tho period necessary for training is lel't to experts. But just now tlioru i> an especial public interest in the matter. I'oui years' training may result in the turning out of a more highly trained nurse, but tlicro is a great danger, owing to the demand for nurses, that tht. clioico will bo between a highly trained nurse and no nurse. Three years' training would undoubtedly bo sufficient for ull ordinary cases of illness, nntf for'military purposes a nurse fresh from her training would necessarily be in close association with others of inoro experience. In war lime many expedients .havo to be tried, Soldiers arc trained with-great rapidity, aud Australians have not shown any less proficiency in tile active profession of hi-iiis becansb they havo had to skip mnn.vthings hitherto deemed indispensable. Tho matter of nurses resolves itself into this, that if sufficient with four years' training aro not available those with three years' training only will have to be pressed into tlio service." Shannon Notes. Several locul soldiers aro at homo on final leave from camp this week, and a social evening is being sirransed by Mesdamcs Mcrwood and Terry for their entertainment next Friday night.
