The death is announced of Mr. 12. H. Hughes, of the Canterbury Frozen .Meat Company's stalf, one of the best-known of the stock and agricultural men in Canterbury.—Press Association.

Mr. J. P. Kelly, chief clerk of the locomotive, branch of the Railway Department, and up till April last Mayor of Eastbourne, is /etirin;; from the Government service on superannuation at the end of the mouth. Mr. Kelly has 'been 42 years in the service, and bv his uniform courtesy and sterling ability has made himself one of the most popular and valued, officers , of the Department. Mr. Kelly is' at present in the south on Departmental, business.

Sutton, secretary of the Xe<v Zealand Club, went into camp some two months ago as a voluntary recruit; Corporal Sutton was present at a luncheon of the club yesterday, and • advantage was takeu of the occasion, to mark hits departure in soiuo proper way. On behalf of the club the president (Mr. C. E. Wheeler) extended to Mr. Suttongood wishes, and presented him with ;i very useful article in a soldier's equipment , , a prismatic compass. Amongst the names of those wounded in France last week is that of l'te. J. .T. Walsh, of the "Lvttelton Times" and latterly of the "Otago Daily Times," which journal he represented as n member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery.

G. Kirkw'ood D.5.0., in command of the 10th Gloucesters. The officer in ■question is a native of Christchurch.' At the. outbreak of the Boer War ho enlisted .in Brabant's Horse as a private, and eventually joined Kitcheners Scouts. At the termination- of the war he was a lieutenant in tho latter corps. When the great war started ho was in South Africa, and he immediately proceeded to England and offered his services. Ho wis given a commission as captain m his present regiment, and crossed ■over W France-with Kitchener's first 100.000. In the advance at I-oos m September, 1915 he was badly wounded with shrapnel in several parts of the body, and also a gunshot wound through hiß right arm. After spending five months in hospital he returned to his regiment in France, and has been there since lie was gazetted a major and awarded the DS 0 for services in tho field, and apnointed to command of his old regiment as from ' March last. Lient.-Oolonel Kirkwood is a-younger brother of Mr. W P Kirkwood, of Stratford.

Mr Brodie Mack, local manager of Fuller's Vaudeville Theatre, who was to have eoue into camp this .month, has received notification of his failure to reach the requisite medical standard.

Flux is a con of Mrs. Geo. Flux- of Wellington.
