INTOLERANCE

* D. W. GRIFFITH'S LATEST DRAMATIC SPECTACLE. ', Mr. D. W. Griffith estimates that the story of "Intolerance," which will ho presented here on. Tuesday week, at the King's Thealre. under tho direction of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., has been evolving in his miud for over livo years. Tho actual work of assembling and reproducing tho variouß phases of what has been chrystalliscd into tho largest series of stage sottings evor niado uso of. spans three years. Ouo million feet of lumber, 'jnilcs of steel guy ropes, train loads of ecmont, and tons of statuary were alone made 1150 of to rebuild Babylon. Tho 67,000 people employed by Mr. Griffith to complete his work outnumbers tho figures hislory given as the combined total of tho army of Bolshazzar, and tho opposing hordes of Cyrus, whoso battlo for supremacy is pictured in "Intolerance." Despite tho wonderful battlo scenes that tho screen has hcrotoforo depicted, tho Babylonians' clash of mighty mon. on. horseback, afoot, and in eliariols;'tho siege towers, and'catapults, llio flaming engines and monstrous ctor.'boivs. presents a warfare that is new lo Hie theatre, warfare beyond the comprehension of modern people. But. it is.a conflict staged to tho minnlest detail, i r < accordant'* with historical data. Tlreso Babylonian scenes, with their Bacchanalian episodes, their pageantry of prodigal luxurv. their realistic combats, form but one-fourlh of what Mr. Grißilh offers as his latest spectacle, "Intolerance." The other three-fourths comprise, the modern drama, the locale of which is America. Tho Fvench story, which takes place in medioaval Paris during the reign of Charles IX, shows, among other thrilling scenes, the massacre of the Husuonols; and the Judean episode which depicts Jerusalem at the time of Christ. A grand symphony orchestra of grand opera, proportions will play music specially composed for the production.
