RANAVALONA. EX-QUEEN OP . MADAGASCAR, Paris, May 24. Hanavalona 111, ex-Queen of Madagascar, is dead. She died iu Algiers.— Ans.-N.Z. Cabio Assn.
Tho last nativo sovereign of Jladagascar was Qiieun Rauavulona Ui (born 18lil), who succeeded in 1883. The French having claimed a'portion of the northwest coast as ceded to $0111' by local chiefs, hostilities were carried 011 in 188281 against tho Horns, who refused to recognise the cession. In 1885 peace was made. Diego Smu'cz being surrendered to Franco. A French Resident-General was recoived at the capital, and' tho foreign relations of tho country wore claimed lo bo regulated by France. By the Anglo-French agreement of August S, IS'JO. tho protectorate of France over Madagascar was recognised by Great Britain; but.tho Native Government steadily refused to recognise any protectorate. In May, 1S!). r >, a French expedition was dispatched to enforce Ihn claims of France, and on Oclovnr I, the capital having been occupied, a treaty wan signed whereby the Queen recognised and accepted tho protectorate. By a unilaleraJ convention made in January, 1806. Madagascar became 11 French possession, and by law promulgated August (i. 18911, tho island and its dependencies were declared a' French colony. . On February 2", 1807. the Queen was deposed by the Resident-General, and on March .11 she and her family were deported to the island of Reunion;' whence, in March, 1599, she was transferred to 'Algiers.
