At the Child Welfare Conference, the Commonwealth Statistician said t!*at though Australia stood next to New Zealand.for lowness of the infant deathrate, there was still room for much improvement. Mr. John Sulman (a leading Australian authority on town-plan-ning) advocated State endowment of motherhood by means of a poll tax on nil adults excepting mothers. A resolution was adopted urging the Government to take immediate steps to check the waste of' infant life through venereal and other preventible diseases. — Press Assn.
