BREACHES OF AWARD

In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, the Inspector of Awards (Mr. fi. T. Bailey) proceeded against H. Brown, proprietor of the .Coffee Palace, Upper Willis Street, ■to recover a penalty of .£lO in respect of au alleged breach of the private hotel and Tfistourant workers' award, by employing a woman as second cook and paying her £1 a week instead of £1 2a. Bd. Tor the defence it was stated that the place was not a restaurant, but the rooms were let to night lodgers'. The employee who was alleged to be a second cook was really a general, and her work consisted in keeping (several ■rooms clean and helping to cook for the family. .

Plaintiff was nonsuited oil the grounds that by his ,own evidence, and also that of tho defendant, it was not shown that the defondant was a restaurant-keeper-. The Inepeotor of Awards proceeded against J. B. Clarkeon and Co., Ltd., for an alleged breach of the Wellington wholesale merchants', 6toremen's and packers' award by employing two junior storemen or packers whea only entitled to employ one. The cake was brought to obtain, an interpretation of the award. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for Is.

In the case of the Inspector of Awards t. Mrs. Brady, proprietress of tie Empire Fish. Saloon, who was charged with employing a second and third hand in her kitchen and paying them less than the_ award rate, judgmout was given for plaintiff for 10s. There was no appearance of the defendant.
