CHRISTCHURCH CELEBRATES EMPIRE DAY
• — A -i ' PATRIOTIC; SPEECHES. By Telegraph—Press Association. \ Christchurch, May 24. Empire Day was celebrated here by a large gathering to-night at the Colisseum. The Distinguished Conduct. Medal was presented to Bflinn./Nimmo by Sir James Allen, who delivered an address on Im-, perial matters and New; Zealand's part therein. Hβ emphasised the effect that the war was having in binding the different paits of tho • Empiro together, and oppressed tho conviction that in the future there, would be eome form of Council of Empiro in : which the Dominions would be ropreeented, and have a say in Tejard to questions of war and .peace. Sir. L. M. Isitt, M.P., spoke on the iieedto lonee. a deeper spirit of natriotisa in the people.'.'.: , " . The Hon. TV. Angus, o£ ilelbonrne, also 6poke, and gave to the aeroplane fund. Hβ expressed , the belief that if tlio conscription issue were again placed before the people of Australia it would be carried.
