Ltd., Victoria Street, Wellington, asked for leavo for Harold George William Wilson, to enable another man to bo trained to Wilson's work. Leave till Juno 27 was granted. An appeal by .1". F. Duncan, civil engineer cadet. 17 jWaararaa Crescent, it» withdrawn, as Duncan is now in cninn.
A. W. Christie, caretaker, Quarantine Station. Motuihi Island, Auckland, who had enlisted voluntarily, applied for temporary exemption. A. month's adjournment was decided upon. Charles Leslie Weston, driver, Jory Street, was given additional leave till Juno 27 for family reasons. Religious Objection Allowed. John Bigg, commercial traveller, 58 Central Terrace, Kelbiirn, was exempted on tho ground of religious convictions. Ho stated that ho was a. member of the Society of Friends, and was prepared to sign an undertaking to do non-combatant work, if the work wag not under military control. Henry William Price, bootmaker, Rosericath, for whom an employer's appeal was lodged, was granted leavo till June 2/. .Tohn Frederick Eager, labourer, U Nelson Street, Newtown, did not appear, and his appeal woe dismissed. Richard Sniythe Gilmour, clerk, 4U Adelaide Eoad, was granted leave till Juno 27. The board dismissed an appeal by Charles Compton. sash and door manufacturer, Hata Road. Hnfeiitai. and granted appellant leave till July 26. Public Trustee's Appeals. Stanley .T. Smith, Percy 11.- Wincliconibo, F. M. Whyte, Harry Turner, and P. C. Dwyer, all of whom had enlisted voluntarily, .were, appealed for by tho Publio Trustee, for whom Ur. J. W. Alucdonnhl appeared as counsel. Mr. Macdonald- said that if these men were taken. <iway somo branches of tho work of the Public Trust Office would break down. The Publio Trustee (Br. Fifcchett) said he would give an undertaking, if tho cases -were postponed for three months, to have others trained to lako up the work theso men wero doing. Capt. Baldwin remarked that Dr. Fitchott had said something similar to that threo months ago. Dr. Fitchett replied that an effort had been ma<lo in tho direction indicated, but tho system tried had not been successful. • . ,
Tho board decided that it had no recommendation to'make.
An appeal by A. E. Lynch,-mercer. Sear toun, was adjourned for two months. Relief till July 26 was granted in tho case of G. S. W. 8011, warehouseman, 40 Victoria Street, a voluntary recruit, who sought tomporary exemption. An appeal by .Tohn Williamson Jlackay was dismissed. The appellant is. now in 1 camp. An appeal by Reuben Hedlay Wilton was allowed, on the ground that appellant had previously enlisted. Wilton was given till June 27 before ho ne'ed re-enter camp. An American Citizen. Herbert A. Brown, a young man who said ho was learning the engineering business, appealed on the ground that ho was a,n American citizen.. Capt. Baldwin: What did you come- to New Zealand for? Brown: To visit relatives. Capt. Baldwin: When would you like to get awa.y? Brown: To-morrow, it possible. Capt. Baldwin: Like- a man leaving a. burning house. . . . Howover, you may bo going to compulsory service in tho States. Brown: T expect I will. Tho board accepted Brown's papers as satisfactory, and allowed hie appfeU.
