ITALIANS MAKE FURTHER PROGRESS
TERRIFIC BOMBARDMENT . Lontioji, May 17. There was a. preliminary Italian bombardment for Hfty-six hours between I Tolmino and the sea. The enemy apparently evpeoted the main attack on the I Carso and east of Gorizia, where they had massed fifteen hundred suns. The principal attack, however, was on the J?Java sector, where the Isonzo runs between steep hills. The enemy held the entire left bank, except at the- Plava. bridgehead, where the Kalians established themselves early in the war. though they have been -unable to enlargetho bridgehead since. Tho Italian guns and trench mortars smashed the Austrian position, and on Sunday the Italians bridged the Isonzo below Plava, and on Monday crossed uninterruptedly, though the Austrian shells filled thfe. valley—Ans.-N.Z. An -Italian official messago says: "There was bitter fighting between Monts C-ucco and Vodice, where Hie enemy's repeated massed attacks were repulsed. Wo retain the bastion of Mont Cuceo from Height Blfl to Height 52-1. We progrossed towards the important summit of Height G52 on Mont Vodiee. "The ouemy counter-attacks eastward of Gorizia were broken. We occupied an important height southward of Grazigna and repulsed a serious and powerful attack in the northern sector of tho Carso.
