HOSPITAL BOARD

FIRST ORDINARY MEETING. Tho first monthly meeting of the Hospita] and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday. There were present: Messrs. JT. Baldwin (chairman), G. Monk, H. l'reeinan, J. W. Al'Ewan, W. J. Thompson, G. Nash, P. T. Monro, D. Campbell, J. Smith, F. Castle, Rev. Dr. Elliott, ■Kev. H. Van Staveren, and Mesdames Grace Neill, M'Vicar, Neil M'Lean, J. Aitkcn, and 'M'Laren. On tho motion of tho chairman, the following recommendations of the Hospital Committee wern adopted"That agree to pay 30s. per "week to the Government for the maintenance of indigent Wellington Hospital district patients at any of tile Government institutions; that permission be granted to -u' to send defective children whose parents wero in indigent circumstances for treatment to the out-patients' department without charge; that accounts amounting to .£751 10a. be written off; that the contractors had started with the erection of tho new ear, eye, and throat ward; that tho monthly acconnts amounting to .£3953 is. Id. be passed for payment." Tho Charitable Aid Committee presented accounts amounting to .£602 7s. H -. which were passed for payment. The report of tho Public Health Committee stated that 77 cases of infectious diseases were investigated during the ended May 8, as against 55 cases for the corresponding period of last year. Of the cases mentioned, 85 were diphtheria, 29 scarlet fever, 9 tuberculosis, 2 puerperal septicaemia, and 2 cerebrospinal meningitis. A discussion took place on tho outbreak of diphtheria, and is reported elsewhere. The following recommendations of the Finance and Property Committee were reported:—"That the tender of E. S. Knight at .£4775 10s. had been accepted for the erection of the eye, ear and throat ward, and that Mr. Fellingham be appointed clerk of works as from May .7 5? ? n increase of salary of ,£1 per week; that the seal of the board be affixed to tho assignment of the lease Sntcliffe to Craig and tho mortgage Craig to Sntcliffe. Accounts amounting to iMTM 12s. Sd. lor the month were passed for payment.
