The\United States has extended a credit of £9,000,000 to Belgium, payable in monthly instalments. BOMB PLOTS TO DESTROY CANAL COMMERCE Sault St. Marie (Michigan), May 16. l-'our people'were killed and three wer9 fatally injured by an. explosion which was intended to destroy tho "Soo" Canal, and locks, and interrupt navigation. The explosion wrecked a pier, but the locks escaped. Pro-Germans are suspected.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The so-called "Soo" (a vernacular mutilation of Sault) canals are artificial waterways leading out of the eastern, end of Lake Superior at the ride of the; River St. Mary. The river, being block-: ed by a large expense of rapids, is notnavigable. There are two canals on. the Canadian side (Ontario) and two on the American (Michigan). One of the latter , is a channel to supply a huge power-] house with water. The ship canal cn. this side is the one attacked, and it carries more traffic than any other canal in the world.!
