War Fund amateur bil-liard-diner tournament now being conducted at Messrs. Alcock and Co.'s advanced another stago last night, when four games were played. E. Bucholz (rec. 85) beat W. Morse (rec. 40) by 20 points; G. N. G'oldie (rec. 85) bent A. J. Mills (rec. GO) by 11 points; J, W. Cantree. 70) beat E. W.. Burd (owes 10) by 25 points; and IC. Mason (rec.. 75) beat C. Lawrence (rec. 00) by 8 points. From the finishes .it. wilt be seen that the games were very closely contested, and that that the handicappers had appraised tho contestants' abilities correctly. George Gray, the champion billiardist, was an interested spectator of some of tho games. The next games will be played on Monday evening. Whilo there is not an actual shortage of staff at the Auckland Hospital, the high pressure at which the doctors there are working was instanced by (he chairman of the board stating that he had to wait for several hours before he could see the medical superintendent. It was becoming more and more obvious that the present staff should be enlarged, yet the scarcity of doctors stopped this. It was decided to pay expenses, plus salary, to three students from tho south, who would be available for duty at Hie hospital for a few weeks. Tho Masterton Borough Council lias decided to insist that only sanitary plumbers be employed in laying down drains in the borough.
