THE CHERNIAVSKYS

ANOTHER DELIGHTFUL CONCERT . ■ Though the weather was execrable the Cherniavsky trio of instrumentalists drow another large audience to the Town Hall last evening. Whilst tlifcir solo work is superb one cannot but concede that their trios form the most delightful part of their programmes/ Their performance of "Variations" from a Tschaikowsky trio was perfect. The simple theme, given out in the lirst instance by the piano, became in their hands a monumental work—dramatic, grotesque, pathetic, and tragio by turns, but always appealing, and played with a force and delicacy that enraptured the audience. The. same combination of excellence characterised the final bracket of trios, which was brought to a conclusion by one of Brahams' captivating and rhythmic Slav dances. Mischel Chorniavsky has developed into a wonderfully fine His solos last, evening were expositions of all that'is delicate in technique rather than tone pieces. That was the casn in the somewhat eccentric "Minuet" of Haydn's, Davidoflt's "At the Fountain," and the second encoro piece, in which his clever trickery was brilliantly displayed, even ( to getting a guitar-like effect by playing the strings with tl;e hack of his how. Jan, the pianist, has increased his tone volume. This was evidenced in .his fine exposition of tho "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" (Bach-Tausig), which is familiar as an organ solo. He also played Snarlatti's "Pastoral Sonata." a composition of great intrinsic beauty, and Liszt's transcription of Verdi's "Risroletto." Leo Chorniayslri is a painstaking violinist. .While he does not ravish the senses to thq same extent as L's brothers, he is always an interesting, and indeed, a compelling, soloist. I.nst evening his solos included a Chopin "Nocturne," AVieniawsky's "Russian Mazurka," and "Carnival de JUisse."' .Mr. Alex. Czerny accompanied liiilliantly. ; The Clicrniavskys will s;ivc a third recital in tho Town Hall on Friday next; .
