CHESS AND DRAUGHTS

WORKING MEN'S CLUB, The twenty-eigth annual chess and draughts meeting of the above club was held on Friday evening, Captain Fisli presiding over a large attendance. Officers for tho ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Mr. E. Mace; viee-prosidonts, Messrs. W. J- Smith, J. G. W. Dalrymple, and Captain Fisk; hon. secretary, Mr. F. K. Kelling; assistant hon. secretary, Mr. H. Douglas ; hon. treasurer, Mr. James Wilson; Match Committeo for Chess, Messrs. Fcatonby, Eton, Douglas, Faullcnor, and Mayne; for Draughts, Messrs. W. H. Smith, Coulter, Burgess. M'Pherson, and Colville; referee for chess, Mr. C. W. Tanner (of the Wellington C.C.) is being asked to take this office, which has become vacant by Mr. A. G. Fell's death; referee for draughts, Mr. J. E. Perry; consulting members, Messrs. Barnes and Perry for chess, and Messrs. M'Phorson and W. H. Smith for draughts; delegates to N.Z. Chess Association, Messrs. Dalrymple and Featonhy. It was decided to nominate Messrs. 0. C. Pleasants (Wanganui), F. Kummer (Wairarapa), and J. G. W. Dalrymple (Wellington) as vicepresidents of the N.Z. Chess Association, representing the southern half of tho North Island. A letter was read from the Timaru Draughts Club asking if a 15 a side match by telegraph could be arranged. The Draughts Committee was asked to report to the General Committee as to whether the use of a wire could ha obtained in the event of its being found possible to raise a team on a Saturday evening. It was decided to hold handicap tourneys on the usual lines, provided sufficient entries are forthcoming by June 2. Tho four players who mako tho best scoro from scratch in tho draughts tourney are to play off for tho club championship on the two-life knock-out system (balloted openings). A successful meeting closed with a hearty vota of thanks to last year's officers.
